Job Highlights: Starting Salary: $78,878 up to $95,876 (not including overtime or other pay incentives).
Additional Certification Pay: 10% for Intermediate and 15% for Advanced certifications.

Anticipated hiring process phases include: Review of completed applications by March 19, 2024 Web-Based Interview: March 27 - 28, 2024 National Testing Network Testing and Oregon Physical Agility Testing: April 9, 2024 at the Bend Police Department.
Oral Board Interview April 9 - 10, 2024 Chief's Interview: April 10 - 12, 2024 Successful completion of a background investigation, psychological testing, and a full physical prior to receiving an official offer of employment.
Tentative start date: July 10, 2024 Upon completion of each hiring process phase, applicants will be notified of their status via email.
National Testing Network Testing: No need to test before your interview.

Applicants who hold a four-year degree are exempt from this requirement.

Entry Applicant Information: Entry applicants who receive a conditional offer of employment will be registered to attend the Basic Police Academy at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training in Salem, Oregon as a fully employed City of Bend Police Officer.
The Basic Police academy is 16 weeks in length and consists of 640 hours of Training.

Functions, Duties and Responsibilities FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification.

Performs a variety of law enforcement duties.
As a first responder to incidents, serves as a direct link between the department and the public.
Duties involve responding to and investigating incident and crime scenes, taking action at incidents, proactively patrolling assigned areas, engaging in information lead policing activities and making independent decisions to deter criminal activity.
Enforcing laws and ordinances, making arrests, preserving crime scene evidence and performing preventative community policing.
May be assigned to specialized units or teams in the department.
Serves arrest and search warrants.
Directs traffic and patrols areas during incidents or any other occasion of a special or emergency nature.
Investigates crashes, completes reports, makes arrests or issues citations; renders first aid.
Conducts investigations concerning various types of crime, interviews witnesses and suspects, takes photographs, fingerprints and gathers evidence.
Attend judicial proceedings, presents evidence and provides credible testimony.
Participates in departmental meetings and attends in-service training classes and schools.
Books in prisoners and transports prisoners when necessary.
Assists other law enforcement agencies.
Completes reports; conducts follow-up investigations and re-contacts.
Renders assistance to the public.
Complies with the safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices.
In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, responds as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, facilities and infrastructure.
Provide customer service and communicate effectively with citizens and coworkers.

Experience and Training: High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of college coursework at time of application (3/14/2024); or have served in the military with an Honorable Discharge or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.
Must be a minimum age of 21 years.
Academy Certification: be able to obtain certification by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training - DPSST Minimum Standards of Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer as noted by DPSSTwww.

Oregon Drivers License upon hire.
Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check and obtain an Oregon State Police Criminal Justice Information Systems clearance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Work in a 24-hour environment with varied shifts including weekends and holidays.
Duties are primarily performed on patrol in an assigned geographical area where the employee is exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions.
When responding to emergencies, employee risks physical hazard from violent, aggressive, and hostile people, a variety of weapons, noise, chemicals, bodily secretions, sharp objects, traffic, drugs and drug paraphernalia and crime scenes.
Physical exertion is required to climb stairs, go over walls, run, move heavy objects, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas and sit for a long period of time during surveillance.
Physical effort is required to lift materials, equipment, and persons exceeding 75 lbs, and subdue combative persons.
Wages and Benefits: Entry Level Police Officers start at step one within the salary schedule.
Below is the wage scale currently used by the Bend Police Department as of January 2023, it does not guarantee a specific rate of pay.
